Vibrant Symposium on End of Life Invigorates C3MD 2015

C3MD 2015

C3MD Stage 2015Recently, Residential Home Health was proud to host the third Care Continuum Conference of Metro Detroit (C3MD) on September 30 and October 1, 2015. Presented in partnership with the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology and MPRO, the conference brought together Michigan providers from across the continuum to learn, share perspectives, and deepen relationships in service of providing ever-better patient care.

For C3MD 2015, more than 500 healthcare professionals and thought leaders gathered at The Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, shattering attendance records. After a warm welcome from Residential Home Health executives, the symposium presentation featured two compelling perspectives on this year’s conference theme, ‘Modern Medicine: It Ain’t the Way to Die.’

C3MD Event 2015The first featured speaker was Dr. Zubin Damania, MD, internist and founder of Turntable Health. Dr. Damania took a personal, retrospective approach in his presentation, tracing his unique career path from Stanford University to Las Vegas as he resisted the demands and priorities of healthcare as he saw it being practiced. With the studied timing of a stand-up comedian, Dr. Damania showed the charisma of his alter ego, ZDoggMD, whose parody songs and music videos about the current state of healthcare have helped bring him into prominence. Yet his engaging narrative stemmed from a core of compassion: the drive to provide cost-effective, high-quality care while also improving patient and provider satisfaction. The success story of Turntable Health and its unique financial and care model moved attendees to their feet.

The floor was then ceded to Dr. Kate Callahan, PhD, RN, of The Huntington Consulting Group. Dr. Callahan, a career nurse turned devoted advocate for advanced care planning and end-of-life care, may be best known for coauthoring the Five Wishes advance directive document. Although her presentation also dipped into personal experience with loved ones’ care, most of Dr. Callahan’s remarks were practical and actionable with respect to helping patients have a say in their own care at the end of life. Her considerable empathy made it clear why Dr. Callahan is considered a standard-bearer in this field; her expertise concerning advance directives — and barriers to enacting them — shed light on the importance of breaking through hesitation and initiating successful care planning conversations with patients and their families.

The fast-moving event was consistently lively, from the networking and new connections made over The Townsend’s refreshment tables to a live ZDoggMD performance of his recent parody song ‘Readmission.’ Residential Home Health is grateful to its attendees and speakers for making C3MD 2015 an unforgettable and inspiring experience.
