Researchers signal hope for joint replacement materials

Seniors who need a joint replacement may find that it’s more difficult to get around their homes. While home health care workers can help with a day-to-day routine, the medical community is hoping to make the process easier with new innovations.

According to research from the American Chemical Society, scientists are suggesting they have a potential new implant material that can move more like a natural bone, as well as foster growth of the bone that’s already there, which means it could take away the need for a follow-up surgery. The study’s authors are suggesting this is an advancement in perfecting the replacement material.

The researchers suggest the new model that features tantalum nanotube materials may be a better option than replacements that feature titanium, stainless steel and other metals that are typically used.

It may be important for the medical world to perfect joint implants, as the surgery will grow in popularity in the coming years. According to WebMD, the number of knee replacements will increase by 673 percent by 2030, while hip replacements will grow by 174 percent during the same timeframe.
